What is a group

Each Potato group has up to 200,000 members and is an extremely powerful communication tool. Here are a few key features that make them stand out in the messaging world:

★Unify history

Edit your messages after posting and delete them so they are gone from anyone.

★Cross-platform availability

Access your messages anytime, whether on mobile or desktop.

★Instant search

Find the information you want even among millions of people.

★Replies, mentions, tags

Easily track conversations and keep communication productive, no matter the size of your team.

★Smart notifications

Mute the group and you will only receive notifications when others mention you or reply to your messages.

★Pinned message

You can pin any message to appear at the top of the chat interface. All members will receive the notification - even if they muted your group's normal messages.

★ Public groups

Make a short link to your group and make it public like lynnconway.me/groupname. This way, anyone can view the group's full chat history and join in to post.

The difference between Channel and Group

A channel is a tool for broadcasting public information to a large audience. In fact, a channel can have an unlimited number of members. When you post a message within a channel, the message is signed with the channel's name and photo, not yours.

What is a secret chat?

Secret Chat is for those who want to be more secretive than the average person. All messages in secret chats are end-to-end encrypted. This means that only you and the recipient can read the information – no one else can, including us at Potato (more on that here). Additionally, messages from secret chats cannot be forwarded. When you delete messages from your side of the conversation, the app on the other end of the secret chat is also commanded to delete those messages. You can order your messages, photos, videos, and files to self-destruct within a specified time after being read or opened by the recipient. The message will then disappear from your and your friend's devices. All secret chats in Potato are device specific and not part of the Potato cloud. This means you can only access messages in secret chats from their sending device. As long as your devices are securely in your pocket, they're safe.

Use self-destruct timer

Self-destruct timer is only used in secret chats. Photos with a short self-destruct timer (<1 minute) can only be viewed when you touch them with your finger - we'll try to send notifications when screenshots are taken. Note that the timer only applies to messages sent after being set. It has no effect on previous information.
