Data sharing
We never share your data with anyone. No.
Cloud chat
Potato is a cloud service. We store messages, photos, videos and documents from your cloud chats on our servers, allowing you to access your data at any time from any device and quickly access your messages from long ago with our instant server search. All data is stored with a high degree of encryption, with the encryption keys in each case being stored in multiple other data centers in different jurisdictions. This way local engineers or physical intruders cannot access user data.
chat
Secret chat uses end-to-end encryption. This means that all data is encrypted with a key that only you and the recipient know. There is no way for us or anyone else to know what is being sent in these messages without direct access to your device. We do not store your secret chats on our servers. We also don’t keep any logs of messages in Secret Chats, so after a while we won’t know who you messaged in Secret Chats or when. The reason is similar to why secret chats aren't available in the cloud - you can only access messages from those devices from which they were sent.
media secret chat
When you send photos, videos, or files via Secret Chat, each item is encrypted with a separate key unknown to the server before uploading. This key and file location are then encrypted again, this time with the secret chat key - and sent to your recipient. He can then download and interpret the file. This means that the file is technically on Potato's servers, but to everyone but you and the recipient, it looks like random, unreadable garbage. We don't know what this random data represents or which chat it belongs to. We regularly clean this random data from our servers to save disk space.
Contact person
Potato uses the phone number as a unique identifier, making it easy for you to switch to other messaging apps (SMS, WhatsApp, etc.) while keeping your social networks. We will ask for your permission before syncing your contacts. We store your contacts so that you are immediately notified when your contacts sign up for Potato, and the names are displayed correctly in the notifications. We only require a phone number and name (first and last name) for validation and do not store any other data about your contacts.
your email address
When you enable two-step verification for your account, you have the option to set up a password recovery email. This address will only be used to send a password recovery code if you forget your password. That’s right: no marketing or “we miss you” bullshit.
information
Everything you delete will be permanently deleted. Except cats. We never delete your funny cat photos, we love them so much. When you delete a message, you remove it from your message history. This means that a copy will still remain on the server as part of the companion message record. Once your partner deletes it too, it's gone forever. Potato's goal is not to make a profit, we take disk space on our servers very seriously.
self-destruct message
Messages in secret chats can be ordered to self-destruct. Once the message is read (two checks occur), the countdown begins. After the time is up, both devices participating in the secret chat are instructed to delete the messages (photos, videos, etc.).
Account self-destructs
If you stop using Potato and don't log in for at least 6 months, your account will be deleted, along with all your messages, media, contacts, and all other data stored in the Potato cloud. You can change the specific time for inactive accounts to self-destruct in the settings.
